Questions electricians ask
How do you calculate a conduit offset?
Multiply the offset depth by the multiplier for the bend angle to get the distance between the two bends: 30° = 2, 45° = 1.4, 22.5° = 2.6, 10° = 6. Then add the shrink (1/4" per inch of depth at 30°) to your measurement when bending toward an obstruction.
What is the take-up on a 1/2" EMT bender?
The take-up (deduct) on a 1/2" EMT hand bender is 5". For a 90° stub, subtract 5" from the stub height and put the bender arrow on that mark. 3/4" EMT is 6", 1" EMT is 8" and 1-1/4" EMT is 11".
What angles are used for a 3-point saddle?
A 3-point saddle uses a center bend and two outer bends at half that angle, most often 45° in the middle and 22.5° on each side. The outer marks go 2.5 × the saddle depth either side of the center mark, and the center mark moves 3/16" per inch of depth for shrink.
How many bends are allowed in a conduit run?
The NEC allows no more than 360° of bends in total between pull points, for example 358.26 for EMT. Four 90s use all of it; two 30° offsets (120°) plus two 90s (180°) leave 60°. Add a pull box when a run needs more.
